The outbreak of E. coli intestinal infection began on 19 March, when the SPKC received notifications of the first 10 cases. The first cases were detected at once in several municipalities - Rīga, Salaspils municipality, Ādaži municipality and also in the South Kurzeme municipality farther afield.
