The crisis in the memory market will lead to an increase in the prices of smartphones and computers. This is stated in a study by International Data Corporation (IDC). In the report by IDC Vice President Francisco Jeronimo, it is mentioned that the boom in artificial intelligence (AI) has led to an explosive increase in memory prices. In this regard, smartphones, personal computers (PCs), and other consumer electronics will become more expensive in 2026. Jeronimo predicted that the era of cheap memory, storage devices, smartphones, and other technology is coming to an end. Prices for equipment are rising due to the needs of data centers processing AI requests and requiring a large number of memory modules and storage devices. According to the specialist, the smartphone market will be hit the hardest — inexpensive devices will rise in price by 15-20 percent. Premium devices will become more expensive by 10-15 percent. "The decade-long trend of democratizing specifications by incorporating flagship features into affordable smartphones is changing direction," said Jeronimo. PC prices will also increase by 15-20 percent. The report states that the crisis coincided poorly with the end of the Windows 10 lifecycle and the users' need for upgrades. According to IDC's most pessimistic scenario, in 2026, due to the crisis, the smartphone market will decline by 5.2 percent, and the PC market by 8.9 percent. In mid-December, well-known insider yeux1122 stated that by 2026, smartphones with 16 gigabytes of RAM will almost disappear from the market. The number of devices with 12 gigabytes of memory will also decrease.
