Ratnieks Reports on Detained Launchers of 'Improper' Fireworks

The Riga Municipal Police received 46 calls related to the use of pyrotechnics on the evening of December 31, reported Riga's Vice Mayor Edvards Ratnieks (National Alliance) on the social network X. In five cases, pyrotechnics users were caught at the scene of the violation. An in-depth investigation will be conducted for the remaining incidents, Ratnieks stated. The Vice Mayor also promised that a full report will be presented next week, when information received from residents via email will be summarized. As previously reported, at the penultimate meeting of this year, the Riga City Council decided to prohibit the use of pyrotechnics in the capital at night with restrictions. The use of fireworks and stage pyrotechnics outdoors in Riga is prohibited from June 1 to August 31 from 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM, and from September 1 to May 31 from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM. The ban on the use of pyrotechnics does not apply to public events approved by the Riga City Council, as well as on New Year's Eve — but only from midnight to 1:00 AM. It was previously reported that despite the restrictions set by the Riga City Council on the use of pyrotechnics, the sound of fireworks was heard in many areas of the capital on New Year's Eve, being launched before and after the permitted time.
