The husband of former president Vaira Vike-Freiberga has died

"My dear Imants passed into eternity this morning in the white peace of God. In deep sorrow, I pray for a light path for his soul. He is mourned by his daughter Indra, grandson Ivars, son Karlis with his wife Linda and grandsons Alisa, Austra, and Ritums," Vike-Freiberga wrote on the social network X. According to archival data from the LETA agency, Freiberga was born on March 12, 1934, in Valmiera. In 1944, he ended up in refugee camps in Germany, and in 1948 he moved to France. According to publicly available information, Freiberga and Vike-Freiberga were married on June 16, 1960. Vaira Vike-Freiberga served as the president of Latvia for two terms — from 1999 to 2003 and from 2003 to 2007. Freiberga was a specialist in computer science. He worked at the University of Quebec in Montreal, where he led computer science programs, was a professor at the University of Montpellier in France and the University of Oxford in the UK, and also taught at the University of Latvia. He was also the president of the Latvian Association of Information Technologies and Telecommunications. Freiberga participated in the work of the council organizing the first Latvian youth festivals. He was a member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences and was awarded the Order of the Three Stars, 1st class.
