Washington advises against calling the war in Iran a war – so what should it be called?

The White House press release states that over the past weekend, President Trump decided to initiate Operation 'Epic Fury' – a 'major combat operation against the Iranian regime.' According to the text of the press release, this is how the events in Iran are to be referred to, rather than as a war. 'Are the U.S. in a state of war with Iran? The President has announced major combat operations against Iran with clear achievable objectives,' the document states. Six American servicemen have already died in the 'major combat operation.' All were killed as a result of an Iranian drone strike on a tactical operations center in the port of Shuaiba in Kuwait, CBS News reports. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the building was fortified, and the air defense system failed to intercept all incoming projectiles. 'You have air defense systems, a lot of fire is coming in, and you hit a large portion of it. But sometimes, unfortunately, one projectile can get through. And in this particular case, it hit a tactical operations center that was fortified, but it is powerful weaponry,' Hegseth said. However, three American military officials told CBS News that the building was not fortified: it was literally a trailer converted into office space and protected only on the sides by reinforced concrete barriers, which could not defend against a strike from above.
