In New Guinea, Australian scientists found two individuals of two different species of the family Phalangeridae alive. These possums were believed to have gone extinct 6000 years ago, reports the journal Records of the Australian Museum. In the tropical forests of the Chenarwasi Peninsula, a ringtail possum, which inhabits tree hollows, and a pygmy cuscus weighing about 200 grams were discovered. The peculiarity of the latter animal is that the fourth finger on each of its hands is twice as long as the others, allowing it to skillfully extract larvae from crevices in the bark. According to scientists, local Papuan tribes, the Maibrat and Tambrauw, helped in finding these animals — they consider possums to be sacred animals. Earlier in the USA, volunteers rescued 163 rats from one house. According to them, they brought in that many rats to the shelter at once for the first time in five years. This is almost 60 percent more than all the rats they rescued in 2025.
