Just one remedy can restore the softness and freshness of stiff towels, and it's not baking soda

Many try to solve the problem with fabric softener, but that's a mistake. Balanzat notes that it creates a film that only temporarily makes the fabric soft but worsens its properties. According to cleaning expert Alicia Sokoloski, it's more effective to use vinegar. Towels should be washed separately in hot water without detergent, adding half a cup or a full cup of vinegar – it removes residue from detergents and minerals. They should then be washed again with a small amount of detergent (about half the normal amount). It's better to dry towels at medium temperature, shaking them out beforehand. Too high a temperature damages the fibers. For extra softness, wool dryer balls can be used. However, even with good care, towels have a lifespan. If they remain stiff, absorb moisture poorly, have an unpleasant smell, or show damage, it's time to replace them. On average, inexpensive towels last up to two years, while quality ones last 5–10 years, notes Sokoloski.
