The Inauguration of Peter Madjar as Prime Minister of Hungary is Expected on May 9

The President of Hungary, Tamas Suyok, wrote on Facebook on Tuesday that the first session of the new parliament will take place on that day. The center-right opposition party "Tisza," led by Madjar, won the parliamentary elections this month, receiving 52% of the votes and ending 16 years of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's rule. According to Hungary's electoral system, this result means that "Tisza" will receive two-thirds of the seats in parliament, giving it a supermajority sufficient to amend the constitution. After the president nominates the prime minister, the parliament will be able to approve it with the support of at least 50% of the deputies. Madjar's election to this position is expected to be a formality. Suyok was elected president by parliament in 2024 with the support of Orban's right-wing populist party "Fidesz." Madjar has stated that he considers Suyok "illegitimate" and has called for his resignation after the new government is formed. If the president does not resign, the "Tisza" faction in the new parliament intends to initiate constitutional amendments that will allow for his removal from office.
