Germany Deploys Tank Brigade in Lithuania

Germany is forming a new tank brigade in Lithuania and is rapidly transferring troops and equipment there, reports the German newspaper Bild. According to the publication, this involves the creation of the 45th Tank Brigade, whose headquarters is already located in Vilnius. The decision to send about five thousand German soldiers to NATO's eastern flank was made by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. The command of the unit is headed by 50-year-old Brigadier General Christoph Huber. Bild writes that the Bundeswehr is utilizing nearly all available resources for the new brigade. The unit is expected to achieve full combat readiness by 2027. Huber, according to the newspaper, stated his readiness to defend the territory of NATO's eastern flank and fulfill allied obligations. Bild notes that Germany is accelerating the deployment of personnel and equipment to Lithuania, including using resources that were not initially planned for relocation. Berlin intends to fulfill its promise of creating a combat-ready brigade by the end of 2027, despite the challenges that arise. Among the problems, Bild mentions delays in the supply of weapons, including Skyranger air defense systems. As a result, the unit may remain vulnerable to drones. To temporarily address the shortage, alternative measures are being considered, including the use of small arms against drones, according to Bild. The Bundeswehr is also facing a shortage of personnel. Recruitment of soldiers, especially for junior positions, is progressing more slowly than planned. To motivate soldiers to relocate to Lithuania, German authorities are offering financial incentives and tax breaks. Despite the challenges with staffing and weapon supplies, Germany intends to meet its commitments to NATO.
