Small details in a business wardrobe affect whether a person is perceived as a professional at work. Experts highlight 5 typical mistakes that often destroy the first impression and reduce the level of trust even before communication begins. Stylist Galina Tkachenko explained this to RBC-Ukraine. ### Mistake 1. Mismatch of image to work environment One of the most common problems is clothing that does not match the level of formality of the environment. Even expensive items can look inappropriate if they do not fit the situation. In business style, balance is important. Too casual clothing (t-shirts, hoodies, excessive oversized) creates an impression of unseriousness. At the same time, excessive formality can look outdated and inflexible. "If the context is not taken into account, clothing does not enhance but weakens a person's position," explains the stylist. It is also important to consider the role's appropriateness: a manager and an employee have different visual signals. ### Mistake 2. Untidiness in details The second critical factor is overall carelessness. Wrinkled clothes, lint on fabric, dirty or worn-out shoes immediately lower the perception level of the image. Even with a well-thought-out wardrobe, small details shape the overall impression. People subconsciously read this as a lack of control — not only over appearance but also over work processes. The stylist advises starting not with new purchases but with tidying up the wardrobe. A neat appearance automatically enhances confidence and professional perception. ### Mistake 3. Lack of structure in the image For the business environment, clarity of silhouette is important. If clothing lacks shape or looks too relaxed, the image becomes visually "blurry." Unstructured items — oversized without balance, soft fabrics, poor fit — create an impression of disorganization. "Structure is the internal framework of the image. It creates a sense of confidence and professionalism without words," notes the expert. ### Mistake 4. Incorrectly chosen colors Color is the first element that is read in an image. It can either highlight appearance or ruin the overall impression. Unfortunate shades near the face often make the appearance look tired or pale. Also, overly bright or contrasting combinations can reduce the level of seriousness of the image in a business environment. Another issue is the lack of color systematics. When the palette is not coordinated, the image looks random and unstructured. ### Mistake 5. Incorrect positioning through style Clothing always conveys a certain signal. If the image has excessive openness, randomness, or lack of stylistic logic, it affects the perception of professionalism. For women, this can manifest through excessive sexualization of the image. For men — through overly simple or neutral items without accents and structure. As a result, the image does not enhance expertise, even if the person is a highly qualified specialist. Business style is not about clothing, but about how you are perceived by others. If the image does not match the context, trust takes longer to build. When the appearance is structured, tidy, and appropriate, it works as an additional tool of influence — even before any conversation begins.
