The end of May in Latvia will be marked by contrasting weather. On Saturday, most of the country is expected to have sunny weather, while the east will remain cloudy with occasional rain. At night, it will be quite cold: the air temperature will drop to +3...+8 degrees, and in some areas of Kurzeme, frost on the ground is expected. For gardeners and vegetable growers, this may serve as a final reminder that the calendar summer has not yet begun. During the day, the air will warm up to +17...+22 degrees, although it will be noticeably cooler on the coast and in some areas of eastern Latvia. On Sunday, there will be less sunshine. Meteorologists forecast significant cloudiness across almost the entire country, but substantial precipitation is not expected. The temperature at night will remain above +5 degrees, while during the day it will range from +12 to +21 degrees. With the beginning of June, the weather will gradually shift to a more summer-like mode. Over the week, variable cloudiness, periodic rain, and local thunderstorms are expected. What is important for most residents: along with the precipitation, stable warming will come. On the warmest days, the air temperature could reach +20...+25 degrees. The changes will be particularly noticeable in the second half of the week. While currently, frost on the ground is still possible in some areas at night, soon the nighttime temperature will not drop below +10...+15 degrees. According to preliminary forecasts, June is expected to be warmer than usual overall. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts suggests that the average temperature for the month may exceed the climatic norm by one to two degrees. At the same time, the amount of precipitation is likely to remain close to the average long-term indicators. This means that the beginning of summer will not only be warmer but also without a pronounced moisture deficit. Thus, after a cool end to May, Latvia will gradually welcome truly summer weather.
