Residents of Slovakia are voting in a referendum, the results of which could impact both the system of state guarantees for former leaders of the country and the anti-corruption policy. One of the questions put to the vote concerns lifetime payments for prime ministers and parliamentary speakers who have held their positions for at least two terms. Currently, such payments, which correspond to the salary of a member of parliament, are provided for by existing legislation. If the current rules are maintained, the sitting prime minister Robert Fico will also be entitled to them in the future. The second question pertains to the restoration of the special prosecutor's office, which dealt with the investigation of serious crimes and corruption. In 2024, the parliament, where the majority belongs to the coalition led by Fico, supported its dissolution. At the same time, a specialized police unit investigating similar crimes was also abolished. These decisions were among the reasons for large-scale protests in the country and drew criticism from several of Slovakia's international partners. The referendum was called after more than 350,000 citizens signed a corresponding petition initiated by the non-parliamentary pro-European liberal-conservative party "Democrats." For the results of the voting to be binding, turnout must exceed 50% of registered voters. However, according to opinion polls, reaching this threshold will be challenging. This is a traditional problem for Slovakia. Since gaining independence, only one referendum has been recognized as valid — the 2003 vote in which citizens supported the country's accession to the European Union. All subsequent referendums have failed to achieve the necessary turnout. Lifetime payments for former high-ranking officials were introduced after an assassination attempt on Robert Fico in 2024. Prior to this, such state guarantees applied only to former presidents of the country. The outcome of the current vote will depend not only on the distribution of votes but also on whether the necessary voter turnout can be ensured.
