A tragic incident occurred on Saturday at the Nemunas Ring racetrack during the Baltic Championship round of circuit racing BaTCC. According to preliminary information, during the last lap of the GT class race, a Cupra car driven by Aivaras Remeikis veered off the track in heavy rain and crashed into the spectator area near the emergency exit, where people were present. According to the police, the accident happened around 11:50 in the Kacergine area. As a result of the incident, a man born in 1969 died, and another spectator, born in 1999, sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. Lithuanian media report that witnesses claim the fatal injuries to the deceased may have been caused by metal gates that the car crashed into. This information has not yet been officially confirmed and will be investigated. After the accident, medical personnel and police arrived at the scene. According to eyewitnesses, assistance to the victims was immediately provided by medical workers and nearby NATO soldiers. Resuscitation efforts lasted about half an hour, but one of the victims could not be saved. The organizers announced the suspension of the competition following the incident. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver himself was not injured in the accident. The police have initiated a pre-trial investigation under the article on causing death by negligence.
