The artillery piece was discovered during work on a waterway near the border with Poland, about 20 km from Cottbus. It is a 76-millimeter Soviet infantry gun M1943. According to KMBD representative Enrico Shnik, the gun is generally well-preserved due to being submerged in the silt and sand of the river for a long time. "I don’t recall such a find in our region," he noted. After extraction, the gun was transported to the KMBD site in Kummersdorf, where it will likely be disposed of. There are currently no plans for museum storage of the find. The town of Forst, which was almost completely destroyed during the fighting in April 1945, today is a small municipality with a population of about 17,000 people.
