"In the event of the collapse of Russia, which may not be so far off, Latvia should assert its right to Abrene, taking the necessary steps to restore our territorial integrity. Abrene is an ancient territory of the Latgalians and was a beautiful and well-maintained place before the occupation. Now it is part of the neglected and dying Pskov region - as usual, the Kremlin occupies territories and then brings them down to the level of the rest of Russia. The border treaty of 2007 was treacherous and harmful to the interests of the Latvian state - it provided grounds to abandon the rights enshrined in the 1920 peace treaty and ignored the issue of occupation and the constitutional continuity of the Latvian state. The politicians of that time promised an improvement in relations with a country that constantly threatens to destroy our independence, but we got exactly what the eastern dictator promised - the ears of a dead donkey," stated R. Zeltīts, who is an historian by education.
