A total of 7,563 people have been detained this year for illegal crossing of the state border. The government has extended the enhanced border protection regime with Belarus until December 31 of this year, which was introduced due to the large influx of illegal migrants. The enhanced control regime is in effect in Ludza and the municipalities of Ludza County, in Kraslava and its municipalities, in Augšdaugava County, in Daugavpils, and in the Kaunata municipality of Rezekne County. Last year, the State Border Guard (SBG) prevented 12,046 attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian-Latvian border.
