Vytautas the Great (baptized as Alexander; circa 1350 – October 27, 1430) was one of the most famous Grand Dukes of Lithuania (reigned from 1392 to 1430). Under his rule, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania reached the peak of its territorial expansion and geopolitical influence, stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. However, let’s return to our time. A working group of the Lithuanian government concluded that, despite the significance of Vilnius Cathedral for Lithuanian history and statehood, there has not been a truly systematic study conducted there. Specialists proposed a comprehensive plan for such research across several directions. In particular, it is planned to create a complete picture of who among the figures of Lithuanian history is buried in the cathedral. "The study of the cathedral basilica will contribute to a scientifically grounded study of Lithuanian history. We will be able to more successfully combat the disinformation spread by unfriendly states, as well as the distortions, downplaying, and falsifications of Lithuania's history," noted the group leader Ingrida Kutkienė. Additionally, the government instructed the Ministry of Culture to create a pantheon of outstanding Lithuanian statesmen within the cathedral. Throughout its history, Vilnius Cathedral has undergone significant destruction due to fires and wars; however, some parts of the building and burials within the cathedral have been preserved since the late Middle Ages.
