The language sphere is advantageous because it... does not require large financial investments or special knowledge - it is not about economic development or attracting investors. Here, everything is simple, clear, and most importantly - political dividends can be easily obtained. If we look at the promises in the language sphere that were made in the run-up to the last parliamentary elections - in 2022 - these promises were fulfilled and even exceeded by the party. "We will completely finish the transition to education in the state language at all levels of education. By law, we guarantee the right of workers to speak with local residents in the state language," the election program of the National Alliance stated. As we can see, all general education schools, and even earlier all kindergartens, including private ones, have switched to teaching only in the state language. We are currently talking about the mandatory curriculum; electives, that is, additional education at one's discretion, do not count. Legislative amendments were adopted that effectively excluded the possibility for employers to require employees, including in the service sector, to speak Russian. Medical professionals are now legally exempt from the requirement to communicate with patients in any language other than the state language. "We will ensure a diverse, high-quality, and protected media space in the state language," promised "New Unity." Since only media outlets in the state language can apply for government grants, this part of the promise has also been fulfilled. What do politicians promise in the language sphere in the context of the elections to the 15th Saeima? Selected excerpts from the election program of the National Alliance: "We will ensure the right of consumers to receive any service in the Latvian language - both in the public and private sectors. We will establish that in state and municipal institutions, mutual communication between officials and employees is conducted in the state language. We will strengthen the State Language Center to more effectively eliminate violations. We will achieve the adoption of a declaration on the de-Russification of Latvia to address the consequences of occupation." And here is what the competitor of the National Alliance, the party "Austošā saule" ("Rising Sun"), threatens to adopt in the language area: "We will develop public media as an independent, politically neutral, and reliable source of information in the Latvian language. We will provide state support to media that create quality content only in the Latvian language. We will significantly strengthen the Latvian language and protect its users by establishing responsibility for disrespecting it and unjustifiably imposing Russian language requirements in the labor market; We will ensure a working environment, service, and communication, as well as the operation and advertising of media only in the state language." The likelihood of implementing such promises is quite high.
