Bergmanis noted changes in the defense policy of NATO countries and the need to consider long-term trends during the TV24 program "Ziņu TOP." Recalling last year's NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Montreal and its concluding meeting, where the United States reaffirmed its commitments to allies, Bergmanis cited the example of the development of reserve forces. According to him, Canada plans to increase the number of reservists to 29,000, while Latvia's commitment is to raise the number of reservists to 31,000. The politician emphasized that these figures are particularly significant given the difference in population size between the two countries. The host of the program, Ansis Bogustovs, asked whether it is necessary to be able to "read between the lines" in such decisions and consider possible future scenarios. Bergmanis agreed, noting that in the field of security, it is important to look beyond the current situation. He also stated that today the world is essentially already in a state that can be compared to a new cold war. According to Bergmanis, it is necessary to consider various scenarios, including the possibility that relations with Russia may change in the distant future.
