They are calling for an increased police presence, clarification of the procedure for placing migrants, and the development of a specific plan to ensure the safety of local residents. This was reported by TV24. As community representative Jana stated in the report, a letter is planned to be sent to the President of Latvia, the Prime Minister, the Minister of the Interior, and the Chairman of the Riga City Council. According to her, the concern is felt not only by the residents of Mucenieki but also by those in the nearby villages of Sunishi and Mezciems. "In recent months, the number of people placed here has significantly increased, and residents no longer feel safe. We are also worried about the safety of children," said the community representative. She noted that some young women no longer feel comfortable walking in the woods or visiting the nearby beach. At the same time, residents emphasize that their concerns are not related to the nationality of the asylum seekers. "We understand that these people are looking for a safe place to live and that Latvia has committed to helping them. But we are experiencing a lot of stress and anxiety because there are so many of them here," explained Jana. Residents of Mucenieki are calling for increased patrolling not only near the asylum seekers' accommodation center but also in the village itself and its surroundings. According to their observations, a police car is regularly present at the center, but there is almost no increased patrolling outside its boundaries. The community representative also reported that children and teenagers have become afraid to use the local stadium and playgrounds. "In the afternoon, sometimes until ten or eleven o'clock in the evening, the stadium is overcrowded. Children cannot come to play football or just use this area because they feel uncomfortable," she said. According to local residents, there have been cases where young women and girls were approached by unfamiliar men who made obscene gestures towards them. Some children also reported that unknown individuals were watching them and following them home. However, the report does not specify whether residents have made official complaints to the police regarding these incidents. The community is also demanding a more open dialogue with government institutions and clarification regarding how the placement of asylum seekers is organized. "Why are so many people placed in Mucenieki? Perhaps there are other places in Latvia," noted the community representative. So far, the open letter has not been sent to the recipients - the collection of signatures from the residents of Mucenieki, Sunishi, and Mezciems is ongoing. After the campaign is completed, the document along with the signatures is planned to be submitted to government officials. "This is a matter of national scale that should be addressed at the country level, not just in our community," emphasized Jana.
