Due to thunderstorms and strong winds, numerous damages to the power grid have been reported in the eastern part of Latvia, the company Sadales tīkls informed the LETA agency. Around 14:00, approximately 9,300 customers remained without electricity in the Rezekne, Preili, and Ludza regions. By 16:00, energy workers managed to partially restore power supply, reducing the number of disconnected consumers to about 6,200. The most challenging situation remains in the Rezekne region. The cause of the outages was fallen trees and branches on overhead power lines, as well as lightning strikes. Sadales tīkls reported that they are operating in an intensified mode and are constantly monitoring weather forecasts. In many cases, the intelligent network management system allows for automatic restoration of power supply through backup lines even before repair work is completed. The company warns that the situation can change rapidly as the storm front continues to move. After one damage is repaired, new outages may occur on the same line, so restoring power in certain areas may take longer. Residents are also urged to observe safety measures. During thunderstorms, it is not recommended to be in open areas, especially near overhead power lines and other electrical installations. It is strictly forbidden to approach downed wires or trees and branches that have fallen on power lines. According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, strong thunderstorms with heavy rain are expected in the eastern and southeastern regions of the country in the afternoon. Hail is possible, and wind gusts may reach 20 meters per second. Energy workers continue to address the consequences of the bad weather and urge residents to stay updated, exercise caution, and avoid approaching damaged electrical infrastructure.
