The Ministry of Climate and Energy (MCE) was established after the elections to the 14th Saeima, when the new government was formed by "New Unity," "United List," and the National Alliance, while the Ministry of Smart Governance and Regional Development (MSGRD) and the Ministry of Economics were created earlier. Currently, several parties represented in the government have expressed the opinion that the MCE should be dissolved after the elections. The National Alliance believes that by concentrating policy in the fields of economics, energy, and regional development in one ministry, decisions can be made more quickly and in a more coordinated manner. As stated by the Minister of Climate and Energy, Jānis Vitenbergs, there is a common understanding within the coalition that the existing model of ministries needs to be reviewed and that the functions of the ministries can be organized more efficiently. Vitenbergs believes that the creation of a Ministry of National Economy would allow for more effective resource utilization, eliminate duplication of functions between various ministries, and speed up decision-making. The National Alliance notes that the reform will have many advantages - in a single ministry, the flow of documents will be accelerated, mutual coordination of decisions will improve, a closer connection between economic development and regional policy will be ensured, and a more rational environmental policy will be established. The party also believes that this way, it will be possible to manage the utilization of funds from the European Union and climate funds more effectively. Energy and energy efficiency policy will be concentrated in one place, allowing for more rational resource use and speeding up the implementation of energy efficiency projects for buildings. Vitenbergs emphasizes that the MCE, which he heads, was created to address specific, urgent tasks to strengthen Latvia's energy security, ensure disconnection from Russian energy networks, and streamline regulation for the development of renewable energy resources. The implementation of these tasks must continue; however, this does not mean that a separate ministry is necessary for these functions in the long term. The National Alliance believes that the current ruling coalition could consider these changes. The relevant amendments have been submitted by the party for discussion at the next meeting of the coalition parties.
