Among the newborns, there were 2323 boys — 6.6% (164 children) fewer than a year earlier, and 2266 girls, which is 2.2% (52 children) fewer. In May alone, 947 children were born in the country — this is 3.1% (30 infants) fewer than in May 2025. Of these, 477 were boys and 470 were girls. From January to May 2026, Latvia registered 11,448 deaths, which is 1.9% (215 people) more than in the same period last year. Thus, in the first five months of this year, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 6859 people. In comparison, a year earlier, the natural population decline for the same period was 6428 people. The number of marriages has also significantly decreased. From January to May, 2396 marriages were registered, which is 19.8% (591 marriages) fewer than in the same period of 2025. According to preliminary data, as of June 1, 2026, the population of Latvia was approximately 1.833 million people.
