A powerful landslide occurred on Friday morning in the Pengshui County of Chongqing, China. According to the Associated Press, the cause of the incident was heavy rainfall. The landslide happened around 9:08 AM local time. A massive amount of earth and rocks collapsed from a mountainside onto residential buildings. More than ten houses were buried under the rubble. Authorities evacuated over 1,100 people from the danger zone. According to the state television channel CCTV, rescuers have already managed to extract at least ten people from under the debris. The search and rescue operation continues, but it is complicated by the instability of the slope. Experts fear a repeat landslide. Footage from the scene shows that part of the mountain massif literally collapsed onto the residential area. Rescuers are using excavators to clear the debris, while large boulders have reached a water body located at the foot of the slope. Despite the damage, two multi-story buildings — approximately five and fifteen stories high — withstood the impact. The landslide occurred in the area of the Wujiang River, which flows through karst mountainous terrain. More than eight thousand units of humanitarian aid, including tents, folding beds, and family emergency kits, have been sent to the region to assist the affected. In addition, the disaster damaged several power line supports, leading to power outages. Authorities temporarily shut off electricity, gas, and water supply within a one-kilometer radius of the landslide site to prevent further accidents. The rescue operation continues, and authorities are monitoring the condition of the slope due to the threat of new collapses. Information about the number of injured and possible casualties is being clarified.
