The producer responsibility organization Zaļā josta has presented a series of infographics aimed at helping smokers properly dispose of cigarette butts and reduce their negative impact on the environment. The main idea of the campaign is simple: the right decision takes just a few seconds but helps prevent environmental pollution for many years. The organization emphasizes that everyday habits play a key role in addressing this issue. The materials explain which methods of disposing of butts are considered incorrect and how to act so that waste does not enter the environment. Although cigarette butts remain one of the most common types of litter in the world, the situation can be changed without complex or costly measures. It is enough to dispose of them only in designated ashtrays or special containers. If there is no place for disposal nearby, Zaļā josta recommends using a pocket ashtray. It allows for the safe storage of a butt until there is an opportunity to throw it away with other waste. The campaign pays special attention to common mistakes. The organization reminds that butts should not be left on the ground, lawns, beaches, or thrown into storm drains. In such cases, they become a source of long-term environmental pollution. It is also not recommended to flush butts down the drain, as this can negatively affect the functioning of the sewage system and disrupt the activity of bacteria in biological treatment plants that clean wastewater. The series of infographics has been prepared as part of the integrated LIFE project "Waste as Resources in Latvia." The campaign reminds that even a small change in habits can help reduce the amount of waste entering nature.
