According to Gedrius Mishutis, a representative of the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania, there were no queues at the border, delays in passing control, or cases of passengers missing their flights during the implementation of the EES or after its full launch on April 10. A similar assessment was provided by "Lithuanian Airports." The company reported that there were no complaints about the operation of the new system, and the situation at all airports remains stable. The EES system replaced the familiar stamps in passports. Now, when citizens of non-EU countries enter, their passport data, fingerprints, and photographs are automatically registered. This allows for monitoring the duration of stay and recording cases of entry denial. While Lithuania is not experiencing difficulties, the situation in other EU countries is different. Last week, representatives of the European aviation industry warned that after the launch of the EES, waiting times at some airports increased to five hours. Later, Politico reported that nine EU states urged the European Commission to consider more flexible application of the system in emergency situations. According to these countries, the first months of operation revealed serious technical and organizational problems. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also acknowledged the existence of technical difficulties, noting that it would take time to resolve them. The EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Magnus Brunner, stated that the European Commission would provide additional support to countries that continue to face challenges. The EES system operates in all EU countries except Ireland and Cyprus, as well as in Schengen zone countries that are not part of the European Union, including Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland. Since October 2025, approximately 110 million border crossings have been registered through the new system. More than 44,000 individuals have been denied entry to countries using the EES during this period. According to the Lithuanian border service, from April 10 to July 15, 822,411 citizens of third countries passed through the country's border checkpoints. For various reasons, 627 of them were denied entry. Lithuania's experience shows that the operation of the new European system can proceed without significant delays; however, in several other countries, the adaptation process remains more complicated.
