France has requested assistance from European countries in combating wildfires. This was announced by the country's president, Emmanuel Macron, noting that two Canadair amphibious aircraft from Croatia, two Air Tractor firefighting planes from Portugal, and heavy Black Hawk helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia have already been dispatched for assistance, as reported by NOS. The most severe situation is in the southwest of France. In the commune of Lege-Cap-Ferret, gendarmes were going door to door at night, evacuating residents. According to firefighters, the situation there is "catastrophic." In the Gironde department, near Bordeaux, more than 20,000 people have been evacuated. The fire has already destroyed about 4,800 hectares of forests and natural areas. The region is expecting temperatures up to +39 degrees Celsius, complicating the fight against the elements. Around 800 firefighters, 260 units of equipment, five planes, and a firefighting helicopter are involved in extinguishing the fires. Earlier, during the elimination of one of the major hotspots near Bordeaux, two firefighters lost their lives. Another large fire is raging south of Bordeaux, in the Biscarrosse area. The blaze started after a van caught fire, and then the flames quickly spread to the forest. More than 1,000 hectares of land have already burned, and about 3,000 vacationers have been evacuated from four campsites. The situation remains equally challenging in the Var department in southern France, between Marseille and Nice. There, a wildfire has engulfed more than 2,500 hectares. Although the spread of the fire has been slowed, firefighters continue to battle numerous smoldering hotspots. Meanwhile, in Spain, the Ministry of the Interior has declared a state of emergency in the Madrid area and the province of Ávila. Due to several major fires, thousands of residents have been evacuated, and the management of the aftermath has been handed over to a military emergency unit. In the Madrid region, around 10,000 people have already left their homes. Authorities hope that the declaration of a state of emergency will allow for the quicker deployment of additional forces and equipment to the disaster areas. Wildfires are also ongoing in Italy. Due to extreme heat and strong winds, the fire is spreading in Sicily and the southern region of Calabria. Southern Europe is experiencing one of the most severe waves of wildfires this summer. High temperatures, drought, and strong winds are preventing a quick control of the flames, forcing countries to unite their efforts to combat the elements.
