France's application has been under consideration for nearly two decades. If approved, five famous landing beaches — Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword — will be included in the UNESCO list, along with several iconic historical sites: Pointe du Hoc, the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer, the artificial harbor at Arromanches, military cemeteries, and memorials. According to representatives from the Normandy region, this recognition will not only serve as a symbol of remembrance for the soldiers who participated in the liberation of Europe from Nazism but will also help preserve these historical sites for future generations. The UNESCO status may also attract even more tourists: currently, around 1.8 million people visit the memorial sites each year, with more than a third coming from abroad. If the application is approved, the Allied landing beaches will become France's 55th site on the UNESCO World Heritage List, joining such renowned landmarks as Mont Saint-Michel, the Palace of Versailles, and Chartres Cathedral.
