The majority of the funding, urgently needed for 2027, is intended to improve the accessibility and quality of medical services, including increasing the salaries of medical staff, reducing patient waiting times, expanding the volume of medical services, and refining tariffs. Investments are also necessary to enhance the accessibility of reimbursable medications and medical devices, strengthen primary healthcare, develop human resources, digitization, public health and prevention measures, as well as to develop healthcare infrastructure. At the council meeting, special attention was paid to measures in oncology, maternal and child health, cardiovascular diseases, rare diseases, mental health, and palliative care. The need to strengthen the accessibility of medical services in the regions and the resilience of the healthcare system was also discussed, as well as the development of services focused on patient needs throughout Latvia. The Ministry of Health also informed council members about the process of preparing the state budget and the limited fiscal space in the coming years. The meeting emphasized the government's commitment to gradually increase healthcare funding and direct a growing share of total government expenditures to the sector.
