Considering that starting next year, the Balvi Hospital will no longer have a round-the-clock gynecologist funded, the medical institution is already finding it difficult to retain specialists in this field, who were already hard to motivate to work in the border area. A similar situation exists in pediatrics. Until now, the hospital provided two pediatricians - in the emergency room and in the children's department. Starting in September, the on-call pediatrician will work in both departments, so stationary patients will no longer have a single attending physician, as is currently the case with a separate specialist in the children's department. Vane assessed the situation as tragic, as the region, including Aluksne, Gulbene, and Balvi, will be left without childbirth assistance, since the nearest maternity unit is in the Rezekne Hospital (about 80 km away). "The emptier the border area becomes, the easier it is to enter it," said a representative of the hospital management. The hospital also lacks full clarity about operations starting next year. Vane stated that discussions are ongoing, and the Ministry of Health seems to be cutting nothing, but at the same time, there are reports of the cessation of state funding for specific specialists.
