Пророк Илья

**What is remembered in the Church on August 2, 2026** Elijah lived in the 9th century BC in the Kingdom of Israel in Tishbe in Gilead (now this territory is located in Jordan). Nothing is known about his origin or his parents. However, according to legend, at the moment of his birth, his father had a vision where the newborn communicated equally with wise elders, who fed him with fire and wrapped him in flames. The parents understood that their son was chosen. This was confirmed in his early youth. The boy grew up as a fervent defender of faith and actively promoted the worship of the one God. By setting an example of a God-pleasing life, he withdrew into solitude in the desert, where he spent time in prayers and fasting. When he grew up, he came to the people by the will of the Lord to warn them of calamities. Elijah performed a great number of astonishing miracles. For example, through his prayer, food did not run out for a pious widow. In her house, he resurrected a boy who later, presumably, became the prophet Jonah. He also divided the waters of the Jordan River. He began to serve the pagan king Ahab, warning him that due to the disbelief of him and his people, a drought would come upon the land and as a consequence — famine. He suggested turning to the true God and as proof proposed to build two altars for different Gods. While prayers were being offered to the pagan gods, there was no rain. But in the evening, Elijah began to pour water on the second altar with his own hands, and fire ignited from the water on it. The sky was covered with clouds, and the long-awaited rain began to fall. The people believed in the true God, and the Lord took Elijah alive to heaven. Perhaps he was not taken to heaven but to some sacred place, where he awaits the second coming alive. **The meaning of the holiday** On this day, the prophet is honored, who did so much for the faith that he was taken alive to heaven. **What do people ask Saint Elijah for?** People ask the saint for help in love, as well as for health, good harvests, and in times of drought — for rain. **Folk weather signs** — Heavy rains on this day predict fires the following summer. — Hot days predict a dry autumn. — Thunder predicts cool days ahead. **What can be done on August 2, 2026** — It is customary to attend services and participate in the procession on this day. — It is customary to bring fruits and freshly baked bread to the church for blessing, which is then shared with acquaintances and given to those in need. — A great day to have a wedding. — A wonderful day to gather guests at a table with rich treats. — One should engage in charity. **What cannot be done on August 2, 2026** — It is better to postpone all heavy work. — One should not start quarrels. — It is bad to look in the mirror for a long time. **Interesting facts** — According to the text of the Bible, besides the prophet Elijah, only the prophet Enoch was taken alive to heaven. — It is also said that only Elijah and Moses had the fortune to converse with Christ during His Transfiguration on Mount Tabor.
