The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania summoned a representative of Russia and handed him a note of protest regarding the damage to the Lithuanian embassy building in Kyiv during the nighttime Russian attack. In the document, Vilnius strongly condemned the shelling of the Ukrainian capital, which resulted in damage to civilian objects, including the diplomatic representation of Lithuania. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that such actions are a gross violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961. After assessing the damage, Lithuania intends to demand compensation from Russia. Additionally, the note states that the country reserves the right to take further retaliatory measures. According to the Lithuanian foreign ministry, during the attack, two Russian missiles or drone strikes exploded in the Pechersk district of Kyiv — approximately five and 150 meters from the embassy's perimeter. As a result, window structures of the building were damaged, glass was shattered, and the roof and installed solar panels were affected. No staff members of the diplomatic mission were harmed. The chairman of the Lithuanian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, Remigijus Motuzas, stated that the incident should be discussed with partners in the European Union and NATO. According to him, even if the diplomatic representation was not the direct target of the strike, its damage during hostilities is considered an extremely serious incident from the perspective of international law. During the same massive attack on Kyiv, according to Ukrainian authorities, at least nine civilians were killed, dozens were injured, and rescuers evacuated more than a hundred people from the destroyed buildings. Earlier, the damage to the Lithuanian embassy was condemned by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
