Alena Ostapenko was unable to complete her second-round match at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto against China's Zhang Shuai. The Latvian tennis player stopped the match with a score of 0–6, 0–4. In the second set, after the third game, she took a medical timeout, but soon after the game resumed, she decided to withdraw from the match. The reasons for her withdrawal from the tournament have not yet been officially reported. Ostapenko, ranked 29th in the world, was seeded 26th and thus began the tournament in the second round. Her opponent, Zhang Shuai, ranked 57th in the WTA rankings, confidently defeated Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva in the first round. Before this match, the two players had faced each other twice — in Rome in 2018 and in Indian Wells in 2019. Both times, Ostapenko was the stronger player. The tournament in Toronto was Ostapenko's first after Wimbledon, where she reached the third round. For Zhang, this is already her second consecutive North American tournament after competing in Washington. Due to her early exit, Ostapenko will not be able to repeat last year's result at a similar WTA 1000 tournament, where she reached the third round. This also means a loss of some ranking points that she needed to defend. In the third round, Zhang Shuai will play against the winner of the match between world number one Aryna Sabalenka and Japan's Moeka Uchiyama.
