The letter from Interior Minister Janis Dombrova to the Spanish authorities regarding the migration crisis in Ceuta has caused discontent in Madrid. Following this, Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs stated that such communications should be coordinated in advance with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to Dombrova, in the letter he expressed solidarity with Spain and emphasized that the events in Ceuta should not be viewed as a one-off episode. In his opinion, the issue requires a pan-European solution and further strengthening of the European Union's external borders. The minister reported that he has not yet received an official response from the Spanish side. After a meeting of the EU interior ministers, Dombrova stated that the response from Spanish representatives towards the Baltic states was "quite positive or neutral." At the same time, Latvian television, citing unofficial information, reports that the letter was perceived painfully in Spain. According to the channel, its tone was considered arrogant, and behind closed doors, the Spanish side indicated that such statements seem inappropriate, given the involvement of Spanish military in strengthening the security of the Baltic states. Kulbergs himself noted that he appreciates the initiative of the Minister of the Interior, but in matters of international relations, coordination of actions is necessary. "I really like the enthusiasm, initiative, and activity of Mr. Dombrova, how he addresses issues related to the protection of our border and the overall security of the country. But sometimes this initiative is excessive. And this is precisely the case where coordination of actions is needed," the Prime Minister stated. This case shows that even when discussing a common issue for the European Union, the diplomatic format of communication between states is of great importance.
