Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs announced after a meeting with President Edgars Rinkēvičs that the public will learn about new decisions aimed at strengthening the border control system as early as August. According to the head of government, issues of national security were discussed during the meeting, including ensuring the security of the upcoming elections and enhancing border control. The government is currently analyzing various options that will allow for more effective counteraction against illegal migration. Kulbergs emphasized that Latvia must be ready to defend itself against any possible provocations and maintain reliable control at the external border. Both technical solutions and opportunities to engage allies in strengthening the protection of the border zone are currently being assessed. He also stated that the Ministry of the Interior and defense structures have agreed to work together to counter key elements of illegal migration, in order to make illegal crossings of the Latvian border and further movement of migrants to other European countries as difficult as possible. "In August, you will hear more information, and the media will be thoroughly informed," the Prime Minister said. President Edgars Rinkēvičs supported the government's actions to strengthen security, noting that the decisions already made and being implemented are steps in the right direction. The head of state added that if the situation at the border does not improve, additional measures may be adopted. He also positively assessed the interaction between the internal affairs and defense structures, emphasizing that quick results should not be expected; however, the consistent implementation of the planned measures should improve the situation at the Latvian-Belarusian border. It was previously reported that on Tuesday, the government did not support the Ministry of the Interior's proposal to temporarily close the Paternieki border crossing point on the border with Belarus. At the same time, Kulbergs stated that additional preventive measures aimed at significantly reducing the flow of illegal migrants through the external border of the European Union will be implemented as early as August. The Prime Minister emphasized that the authorities are considering all possible options for ensuring national security. According to him, closing the Paternieki point remains one of the scenarios being considered, but it is not currently a priority, as the main activity of illegal migrants is observed not at the crossing point itself, but at other sections of the border. Latvian authorities intend to present additional measures to strengthen border protection in the near future. At the same time, a final decision on the possible closure of the Paternieki crossing point has not yet been made and will depend on the further development of the situation at the Latvian-Belarusian border.
