Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs stated that he considers the issue related to the letter from Interior Minister Jānis Dombrovskis to the Spanish authorities regarding the migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta to be closed. Let us remind you that Latvian television reported that Dombrovskis' letter was perceived ambiguously in Madrid due to its sharp tone. After that, Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs indicated to the minister that such appeals to foreign states should be coordinated in advance with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Rinkēvičs reminded that only three officials have the special authority to represent Latvia on the international stage — the president, the prime minister, and the minister of foreign affairs. At the same time, he acknowledged that prompt responses are required on a number of issues and positively assessed the existing coordination mechanism between the president, the government, and the Saeima. According to the head of state, the prime minister has already discussed the situation with the interior minister, and future foreign policy actions will be better coordinated. Rinkēvičs noted that Dombrovskis' letter can be viewed as a document related to both foreign policy and issues of cooperation in the field of internal affairs within the EU. The president also confirmed Latvia's solidarity with Spain and thanked Madrid for the participation of Spanish troops in the multinational NATO brigade in Latvia. Rinkēvičs emphasized that when addressing international issues, it is necessary to consider a broader political and security context. He stated that he has already discussed the situation with Dombrovskis and expressed confidence that the minister will focus on strengthening Latvia's border. "First, we need to deal with our own problems, and only then share our experience with other European Union countries," the president said. According to him, Latvia still has much to do to enhance the protection of its own border and reduce the pressure of illegal migration. Only after that can the country participate more effectively in the pan-European discussion on the protection of the EU's external borders. Rinkēvičs also noted that the issue of illegal migration can only be resolved with a unified approach from all EU states. He stated that currently, EU countries adhere to different approaches both to border protection and to the consideration of migrant applications and the social benefits system, which intensifies the so-called "pull effect." The president made it clear that the incident with Dombrovskis' letter should not continue. According to him, the main priority remains the strengthening of Latvia's border and the development of a unified European policy in the fight against illegal migration.
