The Ministry of Economics stated that the results of the implementation of programs funded by EU funds confirm the need for their expansion. According to the head of the department, Viktor Valainis, the demand for state support significantly exceeds the available funding. The results of the implementation of programs funded by European Union funds indicate the necessity to expand state support measures. This was reported to the LETA agency by the Ministry of Economics. At a meeting of the thematic committee on EU funds, Minister of Economics Viktor Valainis spoke about the progress of programs funded by EU funds and the Recovery Fund. According to him, the results achieved confirm the effectiveness of investments and contribute to achieving the strategic goal of doubling Latvia's gross domestic product to 83 billion euros by 2035. As noted by the ministry, in the programs for improving energy efficiency in multi-apartment buildings and enterprises, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions turned out to be 2.8 times higher than the initially planned level. Support in the field of digitalization was received by more than 15,700 enterprises that are implementing digital processes and solutions based on artificial intelligence. In addition, digital skills have already been enhanced for more than 8,000 residents. In the regions, the construction of 1,140 low-rent apartments has begun, of which 374 have already been put into operation. According to the ministry's estimates, this increases housing availability and promotes labor mobility. Within the frameworks of productivity enhancement and export support programs, assistance was provided to more than 3,900 enterprises, which attracted over 300 million euros in private investments. According to Valainis, in a number of programs, the demand for funding exceeds the available funds by 2.5 times. This indicates the readiness of businesses and residents to invest in development with targeted state support. Given the high demand, the thematic committee approved the redistribution of 14.4 million euros in favor of the energy efficiency improvement program for multi-apartment buildings. The ministry reminds that the application process for projects under the EU program for 2021–2027 started on April 3, 2025. By May 13, the application process for the general renovation program was halted, as all the allocated funding was reserved. The most projects were submitted from the Riga region — 52%. This is followed by Vidzeme (24%), Kurzeme (10%), Zemgale (9%), and Latgale (5%). Riga was the most active among state cities, with 110 applications submitted. The total funding volume of the program is 174.5 million euros, including 1.5 million euros from the state budget for the implementation of pilot projects for building houses using industrially produced wooden frames. The ministry notes that additional funding will allow support for the renovation of housing for at least 2,200 more households. In addition, the allocation of another 8.9 million euros for the construction of low-rent housing has been approved. This will allow for the implementation of additional projects and expand the supply of affordable housing in the regions. The Ministry of Economics believes that the high interest in EU programs confirms their demand. The department intends to seek an expansion of funding for the most popular areas to support investments, housing modernization, and further economic development in Latvia.
