As reported by the LETA agency, the Prime Minister's communication consultant Elina Shverna stated that this week Kulbergs met with representatives of the "Farmers' Saeima" society and the "Latraps" cooperative, as well as visited the construction site of the pea protein production plant ASNS Ingredient in Jelgava. The discussion centered on the competitiveness of Latvian agriculture, rising production costs and prices for mineral fertilizers, the impact of European Union (EU) climate policy, unequal competitive conditions, and the need to develop agricultural product processing within the country. According to Kulbergs, agriculture is the foundation of food security, regional development, and exports. If Latvia wants to maintain the competitiveness of its farmers in European and global markets, state policy must be predictable and support production rather than create new obstacles. The ASNS Ingredient plant is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2027. It will ensure long-term demand for yellow peas grown in Latvia, which will be processed into protein isolate, starch, fiber, and other high value-added products. During the visit to the facility, the project's implementation, its significance for the economy, as well as administrative and bureaucratic obstacles were discussed. According to Kulbergs, such projects demonstrate that Latvia needs to develop the processing of its own raw materials and accelerate the implementation of major investments. According to bb.lv, every subsequent Prime Minister of Latvia sooner or later talks about the need to develop industry in the country.
