The information about the device was received by the Latvian inspection from a competent authority in Belgium. The product is positioned as a rechargeable medical hearing aid with Bluetooth, 16 sound channels, and noise-canceling functionality. However, during the inspection, Belgian specialists found signs of counterfeit data regarding the manufacturer, the official representative in Europe, and compliance marking. The product description states that the manufacturer is the Chinese company Austar Hearing Science and Technology, its official representative in Europe is the Belgian company Obélis S.A, and the notified body is SGS Belgium with identification number 1639. At the same time, Austar Hearing Science and Technology confirmed that model 5216B does not exist at all and the company has never developed or manufactured such a hearing aid. According to the VI, third parties are fraudulently using the manufacturer's name, the details of its European representative, and the CE marking along with the identification number of the notified body. This creates a false impression among consumers that the device complies with the requirements of European Union legislation. The inspection urges residents of Latvia to check whether they have purchased a hearing aid of model 5216B. If such a device is found on the Latvian market, it should be reported to the Medical Devices Supervision Department of the Health Inspection at phone number 67081611 or via email at pasts@vi.gov.lv.
