At that time, there was no railway bridge over the Tornionjoki River, and travelers crossed the border on horseback or on foot over the ice. Lenin crossed the border of the Russian Empire in Tornio on April 15, 1917. From the station in Tornio, he took a train to continue his journey through Finland to Petrograd.
