Since the beginning of the year, at municipal cemeteries in Riga, at least 260 car tires have been discovered and removed. All tires have been handed over to specialized enterprises for environmentally safe recycling. The Riga municipality notes that such findings are regularly recorded during landscaping work. Worn-out tires are classified as waste that cannot be disposed of with household garbage or left in public places. In fact, the costs of cleaning up such dumps fall on the city budget. In addition to the extra expenses, illegally dumped tires worsen the condition of cemeteries and negatively impact the environment. Authorities remind that used tires can be handed over through special collection points and tire collection campaigns. This is how all the tires found in the cemeteries were disposed of. To reduce the number of such cases, the municipality intends to continue the improvement of cemeteries and strengthen control over illegal waste dumping. Authorities also urge residents to use legal methods for disposing of car tires and other hazardous waste to avoid creating additional costs for the city and to maintain order in public places.
