The Cabinet of Ministers supported the proposal of the Ministry of Transport to include the closed border crossing points "Silene" and "Vientuli" in the project to create an electronic border crossing management system. Currently, such a system is already in operation at three functioning points — "Terehovo", "Grebnevo", and "Paternieki", where since October last year, an electronic queue has been mandatory for vehicles. Although the points "Silene" and "Vientuli" remain closed and a decision to resume their operation has not yet been made, the authorities propose to build the necessary infrastructure there in advance. According to the Ministry of Transport's calculations, the implementation of the project at five border crossing points will cost approximately €2.82 million excluding VAT. If we limit ourselves to only the functioning crossings now and later separately equip the closed points, the total expenses will increase to about €3.23 million. In other words, the state expects to spend more now to avoid even greater costs if the need arises to open these border crossings in the future. Experts estimate that deploying the system after such a decision could take about two years. At the same time, not all members of the government supported this approach. Minister of the Interior Janis Dombrava opposed funding for work at closed border crossing points, stating that there is no need for such investments at this time. The Ministry of Transport, in turn, notes that the created infrastructure will be used not only for the electronic queue. It will be useful for video surveillance, secure data transmission, access control, communication, and other tasks related to the protection of the state border. As a result, the government supported the construction and equipping of five border crossing points — "Terehovo", "Grebnevo", "Paternieki", "Silene", and "Vientuli". During the discussion, the ministers also concluded that it is necessary to separately assess future costs for maintaining the system. The proposal to postpone the consideration of the issue was not supported; however, the instruction to prepare such an assessment will be included in the government's protocol decision.
