The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that an American naval helicopter struck the cargo ship Vela Nova, registered in Panama. According to the American side, the vessel was attempting to cross the Gulf of Oman and head towards one of the Iranian ports, despite the ongoing blockade and repeated warnings from U.S. military forces. To stop the vessel, the helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles, which CENTCOM claims were aimed at the engine room. There have been no reports of casualties or injuries. The incident occurred amid the ongoing U.S. maritime operation against Iran. In mid-July, Washington resumed the blockade of Iranian ports, stating that it was applying pressure on Tehran to restore free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
