In Lithuania, trenches will be dug along the border with the Kaliningrad region of Russia and Belarus. This decision was made by the country's government at the proposal of the Ministry of Defense on Wednesday, August 12. According to the government statement, the average width of the trenches will be 20 meters, but in certain sections indicated by the command of the Lithuanian army, it will be up to 150. The country plans to spend about 50 million euros on creating such defensive lines. The trenches along the border with the Russian Federation and Belarus are expected to be ready by 2028. In addition, the authorities have approved measures to restore wetlands by 2030 for defense purposes. Thanks to the wetlands, the territories of Lithuania will become difficult to traverse for heavy military equipment. Lithuania also plans to increase the number of military depots with engineering barriers for the rapid blocking of roads with anti-tank hedgehogs, concrete structures, barbed wire, and other means. ## ## Lithuania plans to spend millions on the production of anti-personnel mines Earlier, the Lithuanian authorities decided to place special structures on bridges in border areas with Russia and Belarus to facilitate their demolition in the event of a military invasion. The country has also withdrawn from the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel mines and stated that it intends to spend several hundred million euros on their production. In early August, Lithuania's Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys reminded that by 2027, the number of soldiers from the 45th Tank Brigade of the German Bundeswehr deployed to this country will increase to 5,000 to protect NATO's eastern flank from military threats from Russia and Belarus.
