Just a few weeks ago, the Latvia U-16 youth national team was mainly known to specialists and basketball fans. Now, the team has returned from the European Championship in Romania with gold medals and has become one of the main sports events of this summer. The Latvian basketball players won all seven matches of the tournament. On their way to the title, they confidently defeated Serbia in the Round of 16 by a margin of 40 points, then beat Greece (92:80), Spain (92:87), and in the final, they were stronger than France — 75:69. This success holds special significance for Latvian sports. It is only the second championship title for Latvia at the European Championships in classic basketball since the historic victory of the national team at the first European championship in 1935. According to Latvijas Avīze, one of the key factors for success was the combination of bright leaders, good physical conditioning, teamwork, and effective coaching staff. The history of Latvian basketball shows that many medalists from youth championships later became players for the national team. For instance, the silver medalists of the 2014 U-16 European Championship, Kristers Zoriks, Arturs Strautiņš, and Rodions Kurucs, later established themselves in adult basketball. Therefore, many view the current success not only as a victory in a separate tournament but also as a possible foundation for the future national team. Particular attention during the championship was drawn to Benjamin Janis Berrois — the son of former Latvian basketball player Lasma Jakabson. The publication highlights his bright play and willingness to act in the interests of the team. Marcus Jahovich, the son of former Latvian national team player and current president of VEF Rīga Gatis Jahovich, was also included in the symbolic team of the championship. During the tournament, he averaged 18.1 points per game, ranked among the top scorers of the competition, and showed one of the highest percentages of three-point shooting. Whether the current champions will become future leaders of the adult national team remains to be seen. However, their victory has already become one of the most significant achievements in Latvian basketball in recent decades.
