As the president stated on social media, the cyberattack on the information systems of the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) and the subsequent large data leak pose a serious threat to national security. According to Rinkēvičs, the incident has damaged the reputation of the CSDD and undermined public trust in the institution. Earlier, the deputy head of the institution for preventing cyber incidents Cert.lv, Varis Teivans, reported that as a result of the attack, the perpetrators obtained personal data of approximately 1.2 million people, as well as information about around 200,000 legal entities. The data in question relates to payments made to the CSDD over the past 18 years. According to Teivans, the investigation revealed that a vulnerability in one of the internet-accessible systems of the CSDD was exploited for the attack. Additionally, it was found that the directorate did not comply with several requirements set by the Cabinet of Ministers for Class A information systems. In particular, the requirements regarding multi-factor authentication and conducting penetration tests on information systems were not met. Earlier, the prime minister stated that the board and council of the CSDD must bear full responsibility for what happened. In this regard, the Minister of Transport has been tasked with assessing whether the officials of the CSDD are suitable for their positions. For his part, the chairman of the board of the CSDD, former mayor of Riga Aivars Aksenoks, does not plan to resign due to the personal data obtained during the cyberattack on the CSDD. "At present, I do not see any violations on the part of the CSDD board," Aksenoks stated.
