Initially, the state allocated 378 million euros for the project. "The barrier complex is essentially ready. Finishing works are underway," says Erkki Matilainen, the project manager at the Border Guard headquarters. The facility is expected to be fully handed over to the customer in September. The complex includes a metal mesh fence, an access road, a cleared strip of land, and a technical surveillance system. The fence is being built to prevent illegal border crossings. The total length of the Finnish-Russian border is about 1,300 km. The new barrier covers only specific sections: 140 km in South Karelia and Kymenlaakso, another 35 km in North Karelia, and 25 km in Kainuu, Koillismaa, and Lapland. Other NATO countries are also strengthening their borders. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are creating the Baltic Defence Line — a system of anti-tank obstacles, trenches, bunkers, and other defensive structures along their borders with Russia and Belarus. Estonia plans to strengthen about 135 km of its land border with Russia. By January 2026, the construction of 110 km of barriers was completed, with the remaining sections expected to be finished by 2027. Latvia completed the construction of a 280-kilometer fence on its border with Russia by the end of 2025. The total budget for the project was 166 million euros. Currently, work is ongoing to develop border infrastructure — patrol roads, pedestrian bridges in marshy areas, observation towers, and engineering structures. Previously, Latvia also built a 145-kilometer fence on its border with Belarus. Poland is implementing the "Eastern Shield" project, which spans about 700 km along its border with Belarus and the Kaliningrad region. Approximately 2.3 billion euros have been allocated for the program. The project includes the construction of anti-tank obstacles, fortifications, surveillance systems, and military infrastructure. The implementation of the project is planned for 2024–2028. In 2022, the country built a steel fence 5 meters high and about 190 km long on its border with Belarus, reports The Moscow Times.
