According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, the water level in rivers has sharply increased due to the precipitation. It will continue to rise, thus the area of flooded riverbanks and lowlands will increase. The warning is in effect from 18:45 on August 23 until 14:00 on Tuesday, August 25. It was previously reported that a very strong storm hit Latvia on Saturday evening and into Sunday night, resulting in more than a quarter of a million households being left without electricity. In the last 24 hours, the highest amount of precipitation was recorded in Kolka — 124 mm. In other areas of Kurzeme and the central part of the country, 40 to 80 mm of precipitation fell. According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, the strongest wind gusts were recorded in Riga — 31 m/s. In Jelgava and Rezekne, gusts reached 27 m/s, while in Saldus, Stende, Ventspils, and Bauska, they reached 26 m/s.
