Minister of Welfare Rainis Uzulnieks (ZZS) disagrees with such a pessimistic scenario and emphasizes that the pension system in Latvia is stable. During the discussion, it was reminded that several years ago it was publicly predicted that in about 20 years the pension system could face serious difficulties as the number of working individuals decreases and society ages. However, Uzulnieks points out that there are currently no grounds for such concerns. "I believe our pension system is stable," the minister emphasizes. At the same time, he acknowledges that one of the most significant risks is the declining population of Latvia, as the sustainability of the pension system is closely linked to the number of workers and social contribution payers. "Of course, the downside is that our population is indeed decreasing because the pension system also depends on the population size," says Uzulnieks. The minister emphasizes that he himself has more than 20 years until retirement, yet he is not worried about his future pension. "I have more than 20 years until retirement, and I am confident that I will have a good pension if I continue to pay social contributions," notes Uzulnieks. Thus, the minister urges residents not to lose faith in the pension system and to continue making social contributions, while also acknowledging that demographic trends in the future will be one of the most significant challenges.
