The cause of the accident is still unknown. ### 244 people rescued According to local media citing authorities, there were a total of 267 people on board, including eight crew members. The Prime Minister of Northern Cyprus told CNN Türk that 244 people have been rescued so far. Another 23 people are being searched for at sea. A large-scale search and rescue operation involves coast guard boats, helicopters, civilian vessels, and ships from private shipping companies. Six military ships are also participating in the operation. Ambulances are on standby at the shore. The rescued passengers are being taken to the port of Girne, where they are receiving necessary assistance. ### The vessel was heading to Turkey The ferry was traveling from Girne to the Turkish port of Tasucu. It is a high-speed passenger catamaran that was used on a regular route between Northern Cyprus and the Turkish coast. The vessel was built in 2000. It is about 40 meters long and about 10 meters wide. According to Turkish media reports, after the crash, the catamaran completely sank and settled on the seabed. Northern Cyprus is a self-proclaimed republic, the independence of which is recognized only by Turkey. The search and rescue operation is ongoing. The reasons why the passenger vessel capsized shortly after leaving the port are yet to be determined.
